Approaching
This week’s Torah portion, Vayigash,
reminds us that all life unfolds in mystery
and how we approach the unknown
and how we tell our stories
shapes the way everything continues to evolve.
What will give us the strength to stand in the face of the uncertainty,
to approach the moment
even as we have no idea what will be?
It might be helpful to move slowly, to pause often,
to call on the ancestors
and feel the life breath within us
that connects us all.
Being kind toward ourselves when fears arise
and doubts assail us,
doing our best not to follow the stories of doom
the mind insists upon,
can help us approach with dignity and grace.
Telling our stories with intention and care
also helps clear the way forward.
We can tell our stories in ways that emphasize blame
and reinforces resentment and injury.
And while not denying what is true,
we can also tell our stories in ways
that turn us toward connection, hope and healing.
As we continue to face the uncertainty,
difficulty and pain of our times,
may we approach the unknown together,
sharing our strength and insights.
And as we tell the stories of these times
let’s remember to speak of the kindness,
generosity, courage, strength and goodness
of so many.
May love guide us.
May shared joys lift us.
Blessings to all who are celebrating Christmas and will be entering Kwanzaa.
May our prayers and devotion dance in the spaces between us.
Shalom,
Rabbi Yael
