Praying with the News
Dear Friends,
Many years ago, I was taught the practice of Praying with the News.
In this practice, each time we read or listen to a news report that enrages us, saddens us or has us spiraling in despair, we pause and turn our attention to those being harmed and pray for their healing and well-being.
Doing so allows us to feel our anguish and turns toward connection and compassion. Praying with the News can help us bear witness to devastation and mayhem, while keeping our hearts soft, our minds calm and our actions clear.
During these very challenging times, I need practices to help me hold my sorrow, quiet my fear and uproot the hatred growing on my heart. I need practices to guide me in returning to compassion, joy and possibility so I can best be of service. I find Praying with the News painful and so helpful. It acknowledges anger, makes room for grief and grounds me in connection, love and care.
I look forward to engaging in this practice together. May it support us in our work for healing, justice and peace.
Much love and blessing.
Shalom,
Rabbi Yael
